I've set up PG 12.04 in a VirtualBox that I access about once a fortnight. Tonight I opened it up the same as always, but the login prompt looked a little different, showing the machine name and just "Other..." underneath. Pressing enter I'm prompted for the username, which I enter correctly, and then I'm prompted for the password, which I enter correctly, and then all I get is the rotating beachball. Environ is GNOME, but I've also tried GNOME Classic. Both give the same beachball.
I can press Ctrl+Alt+F3 (not sure what that's called) and login successfully, browse around, and have even tried a couple of commands, all without trouble.
I'd like to either be able to log in to the GUI again, or alternatively, use the Ctrl+Alt+F3 option to get in and copy off some important files to the local HDD. I can always reinstall/rebuild the VirtualBox installation, but I must get those files. If I can't fix my login problem can the copying be done? If so, please tell me how.
Many thanks.
