External Monitor Setup

Using PinguyOS 13.04 and am having issues with a laptop and external monitor setup. The external monitor is an Acer H233H. I can control the brightness on the laptop monitor but even downloading the monitor brightness app from USC it won't make it any brighter(but it will make it dimmer=FAIL). the /sys/class/backlight directory is confusing as all the forums indicate it should have ddcontrol or the like, but it does not. I have two folders in /backlight, acpi_video0 and acpi_video1 which have stuff in them which indicates the brightness is at a 10, max brightness 10 and so forth. I
