just can't get pinguy to install

I have a samsung laptop R65 with 1.6 dual core processor, 3.5Gb ram, and win XP. I have downloaded and created live DVD's of both the 64 and 32 bit versions, I have downloaded and used the recommended usb stick installer to put copies of each in turn on a stick. I have set up the bios to commence with either dvd or removable device but absolutely NOTHING will persuade it to do anything other than start up XP.
If I can't even install linux then it doesn't seem to say that the OS has got very far since I last tried Linux some 10 years ago! Perhaps I'm missing something but for the life of me I can't see what as I have downloaded and followed all the installation guides.
