Hi guys,
I have a late 2012 Mac mini although I haven't run OS X on it for over 6 months now. I currently don't have OS X installed at all and I'm dual booting Pinguy OS 14.04.1 with Linux mint 17 Cinnamon edition.
I've read on certain forums that if you're going to run Linux on a mac that you should always keep OS X installed even if it's on a small partition. The reason given for this is that you need OS X installed to receive firmware updates with the Mac using EFI and all.
Now, Whilst I understand that if I do want to keep the firmware on my Mac up to date I WILL have to have OS X on a partition. My question is this: Is it vital for me to update the firmware on my Mac? I don't really want to install OS X even on a small partition. The two distros I'm running at the moment are running great and my Mac mini hasn't had OS X on it for over 6 months.
However, would you say it's best if I install OS X on a partition just to get firmware updates, or doesn't that really matter?
Thanks in advance.
- Chris.
